The Country Willow fully respects and follows all applicable copyright and trademark law. We will not publish links to patterns that believe are infringing upon the intellectual rights of another party.
To make this site most useful for crocheters and knitters, we have chosen to include pattern thumbnails and short descriptions. Based on existing legal precedent, we believe that our inclusion of this material in our directory falls under fair use. Scroll to the bottom of this page for more information about fair use and links to applicable case law.
Designers and publishers retain full copyright to all photos and pattern descriptions found in our directory.
We believe our Free Pattern Directory benefits both crocheters, knitters, and designers/publishers. Crocheters and Knitters benefit by being able to search and browse through the listings, looking at photos to determine which patterns are really of interest to them. They will not be frustrated by arriving at a designer’s site only to find a pattern is not what they expected. Designers and publishers benefit by receiving site traffic from customers who are truly interested in their products, which will hopefully result in a longer stay on their websites as customers browse for more patterns that may be of interest.
While we believe fair use allows us to include photos and pattern descriptions in our directory, we want to respect and follow the wishes of each individual designer/publisher. Despite the benefits listed above, if you would prefer your patterns not be listed in our directory, we are very happy to remove any listings for your patterns upon your request. Please scroll down for information on how to submit your request to us via a DMCA Takedown Notice.

Fair Use Statement and Links to Applicable Case LawWe believe our use of pattern thumbnails and short descriptions qualifies as fair use since 1) we are transforming the use of the images to facilitate identification and location of the patterns listed in our search engine; 2) we are displaying only thumbnail size images of the pattern and a brief description and not the actual pattern itself; and 3) the directory will not have an adverse effect on the copyright holders because it will drive traffic to the copyright owner’s site and the size of the thumbnails makes using them to create a crocheted or knitted item instead of the pattern or photos on the copyright owner’s website an unattractive option.
