Owl Bunting - A Free Crochet Pattern

I made this beautiful bunting to add to my door in the garden.  This would make a outstanding Christmas Owl Bunting if you changed the colors.  Perfect for those dull areas that need some color, birthday themed parties, or for the person in your life that adores Owls. Can you imagine this done in white with green eyes to make it look like a Snow Owl, with some bright curlicues and band? The options on this are endless.  Have fun with this and show me your pictures!!!

Owl Bunting

Owls: Make 4

Materials:

#4 Worsted Weight Varigated  

I used Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable in Winery               

Tapestry Needle                                                    

8 Buttons     

G hook

Stitches:

Ch-chain                                          

Dc- double crochet                       

Lp(s)-loop(s)                                   

Sl st- slip stitch                    

Sc2tog-single crochet two together    

St(s)- stitch(es)

Sc-single crochet

Scale St(see special sts)

Special Stitches:

Scale Stitch: 5 dc down the post of the previous row, ch 1, 5 dc up the next dc of the previous row.

CH 21
Row 1:

 DC 3rd stitch from the hook, *ch 2 and skip 2 stitches on the chain, dc twice into the next stitch. Repeat * across. Turn

Row 2:

 Ch 3, dc 4 times down post of the first dc of previous row. ch 1, dc 5 times up the next post, *ch  1,Skip next two dc posts, dc 5 times down the next dc Post, ch 1, dc 5 times up the next dc post. Repeat * to the end. Turn (You will have 4 scales).


 Row 3:

Ch 1 and sl st into the gap space between the 2 dc posts below, ch 3, 1 dc into the space between the two dc posts below. *Ch 2, 2 dc into the next space between the two dc posts below. Repeat * to the end. Turn.


 Row 4:

Ch 1, sk first 2 dc posts and immediately dc 5 times down next dc post, ch 1, *dc 5 times up the next dc Post. ch 1, sk next two dc posts and immediately dc 5 times down the next dc post. Ch 1 Repeat * to the end. Last stitch you will do a single crochet into the gap space between the final two dc posts. (You will have only 3 scales across).

Row 5:

Repeat Step 4 – 5

Row 6: CC

Sl st to first set of dc, ch 1, 2 sc in the same st, *3 sc in the next set of dc, rep. across. (15 sts)

Row 7-10:

Ch 1, sc in the first st and each st across. (15 sts.)

Row 8:

Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc2tog, sc across to last 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in the last st. (13 sts)

Row 9:

Ch 1, sc in the first st and each st across. (13 sts)

Row 10:

Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc2tog, sc across to last 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in the last st. (11 sts)

Row 11:

Ch 1, sc in the first st and each st across.  (11sts)

Row 12:

Ch 4, sl st to join in same st (creates ear), sc across to the last st. Ch 4, sl st to join ( creates other ear. Finish off.  Leave a long tail to use as a hanger.  Attach the other end by sewing it to the other side.

Weave in ends.

Place buttons about a ½ inch from the edge of the owl.  Make a button nose or

Chain 5 Slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook, SC, HDC, DC, fasten off leaving long tail to sew on, place the nose between the eyes.

For curlicues:  Make 5
Ch 23

Step 1: 1 dc into the 4th chain from your hook.

Step 2: 1 dc into the same stitch.

Step 3: 3 dc into the next chain

Repeat row 3 until you have worked all the chain stitches.


For the chain:  Chain 301

Row 1:

 DC 3rd stitch from the hook, *ch 2 and skip 2 stitches on the chain, dc twice into the next stitch. Repeat * across. Turn

Row 2:

 Ch 3, dc 4 times down post of the first dc of previous row. ch 1, dc 5 times up the next post, *ch  1,Skip next two dc posts, dc 5 times down the next dc Post, ch 1, dc 5 times up the next dc post. Repeat * to the end. Turn

Row 4:
Ch 1, sc in the same st as ch 1, sc in the next  st and in each st across. 

Rows 5-9:
Repeat row 4.  Finish off and weave in ends.

Add your owls and curlicues by alternating them starting with the curlicue.

Finish and hang!
